By leveraging our expertise in advanced manufacturing and systems integration, we’re bringing lighter, more fuel efficient products to the next generation of aircraft components.

A350 Nacelle Enhancement Program (NEP)

We collaborated with Airbus to enhance the nacelle, which includes the fan cowl, thrust reverser, exhaust system and other equipment items — saving approximately 122 kilograms per aircraft. And the lighter the aircraft, the higher the fuel efficiency.

Composite materials and advanced manufacturing

Our Center of Excellence in Banbury (UK) develops composite fuel pipes to replace heavier metal components.

New materials for the next generation of flight

We’re looking at new materials to use across a number of applications—nacelles, next-generation aircraft seating, landing gear, among others—that will each contribute to a more sustainable aviation future.

In late 2021, we acquired Dutch Thermoplastic Components (DTC), specialists in stamp forming and incorporating thermoplastics in medium-sized, complex, primary structures. The new capabilities allow us to offer customers a new level of advanced and precision composite capabilities – including automated fiber placement and advance welding technologies – that can help us bring the benefits of lighter-weight thermoplastics to a range of Collins’ product lines.

Also in 2021, Collins, in collaboration with key partners in the UK, was awarded a four-year, $3.6 million grant to help deliver complex-shaped composite components for the next generation of aircraft. The program will focus on system simplification, weight reduction and cost competitiveness in support of the UK’s global initiatives to lower carbon emissions.
